Site Problem & Fix

With the move to FrontPage 2000 extensions on the server in December, this site has become too large to properly update using FrontPage's publish command. Seems there are too many links, causing a memory error with the FrontPage extensions and the resultant failure to update all its text indices across the site.

Therefore, I am furiously reworking the site to minimize unnecessary links. This means that the new site will not have the sub-section links at the top of each page. Instead, a new navigation system will be implemented using a JavaScript menu from www.coolfocus.com. This will also increase the speed of each page loading, as removing the links from the top of each page saves around 20-25k per page.

The downside to this -- if in fact it is -- will be the necessity for visitors to have a java-capable browser, and allow java scripts to run. Since everyone using this also uses the MS site itself, I don't see this as a real problem.

In addition to the new menu, I am testing the use of subwebs within the VBnet site. If these tests prove successful, I will be able to provide additional search capabilities to the various sections of the site.  I will post a "tour' version of the new navigation system once I get a few more changes finalized.

Site Updates

I'm working in a new system, and have just gotten FP to work on it. If all goes as planned, the site will have new content this weekend, including the poll results and new VB links.  Sorry for the delay.

Site Updates & Changes
» The sub-frames that I have historically used as a secondary navigation system are gone (ie the mini-navigation frames from the Code, Dev and News menus). All site pages have a new on-page dual navigation system. The Blue VBnet header items will take you to the site's main-section index pages, and each VBnet page will present under that a set of sub-navigation links within that section where required (like the 'gold' menu above).  This change removes the need for the 'Related Topics' and "VBnet Frames" links on each code page, as all pages sport the site navigation menu itself.

Its difficult to tell how efficient (or inefficient) these changes may prove to be for VBnet visitors, as I could only test them using a cable modem hook-up. I therefore will appreciate any feedback you care to offer regarding the new site's performance.

»     The Developer Resources and Sponsorship areas are not yet fully converted, so those pages may generate 404 errors for the next couple of days.

»     The biggest change is the move from a personal site to a commercial site.  While I had been considering this for some time, the move was accelerated by my three nieces at university age, and my wanting to help out with their university costs.

VBnet is therefore very pleased to announce that Compuware Corporation - AKA the NuMega folks -- are sponsoring all the primary pages on the site -- including all the API and Code Library pages.  Please give them your support by visiting their site and downloading their documentation and demos.

Once these changes are finalized, I'll post the dozen or so pages I have waiting to go on the site.

So you're a VBnet Newbie, eh?
Hey! .. so this is your first visit! Grab a coffee and take just a few minutes to read the VBnet Philosophy and @VBnet pages from the links at the top of the page. These provide brief descriptions of the site areas, what my supposed mission here is, and how to get the most out of VBnet.
